Anglia Ruskin University’s contribution to cybersecurity through CSE Connect is grounded in a long tradition of applied, socially responsible education that began in 1858 with the founding of the Cambridge School of Art. Inspired by the values of John Ruskin, the institution has consistently prioritised education that addresses real societal needs, an ethos that now underpins ARU’s approach to cyber resilience, digital ethics, and workforce development.

Through its evolution into technical and vocational education providers, most notably the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology and the Essex Institute of Higher Education, ARU developed strong foundations in engineering, computing, and applied sciences. These strengths positioned the University to respond early to the growing importance of information systems, networked technologies, and digital risk as computing became embedded in industry and public services.

Gaining university status in 1992, ARU (then Anglia Polytechnic University) expanded its computing and technology provision with a clear focus on industry relevance, professional standards, and employability. This polytechnic heritage remains central to ARU’s cybersecurity identity, emphasising practical skills, hands‑on learning, and close collaboration with employers.

Established to bring together education, research, skills development, and industry engagement, the CSE Connect Hub represents a natural progression in ARU’s cybersecurity journey. The hub aligns academic expertise with regional and national cybersecurity priorities, supporting students, educators, employers, and professionals through training, outreach, collaborative projects, and professional engagement. It reflects ARU’s long‑standing commitment to partnership working and its belief that effective cybersecurity requires technical capability alongside ethical awareness and social responsibility.

The CSE Connect Hub also embodies ARU’s mission to widen participation in digital and cyber careers, working with schools, professional bodies, and industry partners to build inclusive pathways into the sector. Through initiatives involving organisations such as Cisco and professional communities including ISC2, the hub strengthens links between education and the cybersecurity profession, ensuring learners are prepared for real‑world challenges.

Today, CSE Connect stands as a focal point for ARU’s cybersecurity activity, bringing together over a century of applied education with modern cyber expertise to support a resilient, skilled, and ethically grounded cybersecurity ecosystem for the region and beyond.
