Generative AI and Cybersecurity: How AI Changes Software Vulnerabilities and Cyberattacks

Organised by Nathan Clarke

In partnership withPPlymouth Regional Hub

Artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, offers significant opportunities to improve how we work, create, and interact with technology. At the same time, it creates new cybersecurity challenges. Magdalena Glas takes a two sided look the dark side of the technology. On the one hand, attackers can use AI to automate vulnerability discovery and exploitation, potentially launching attacks faster than conventional security mechanisms can detect them. On the other hand, AI-assisted programming enables individuals to produce large amounts of code in a short time, potentially introducing vulnerabilities that developers neither anticipate nor recognize.

Bio: Dr. Magdalena Glas is a PostDoc at the University of Regensburg (Germany) and an incoming Assistant Professor at the University of Leiden (Netherlands). Her research evolves around the human factor in cybersecurity and cybercrime. During her PhD at the University of Regensburg, she examined the use of cyber ranges, realistic simulations of digital environments, for training security experts. Since then, she has worked in international and interdisciplinary research teams and has spent research visits at the University of Cambridge (UK) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norway).
